Maharashtra IPS Officer Sadanand Vasant Date Appointed NIA Chief

In a significant move, Sadanand Vasant Date, currently heading Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad, has been appointed as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The decision, sanctioned by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), sees Date, a 1990-batch IPS officer from Maharashtra cadre, stepping into the role until his superannuation on December 31, 2026. Date succeeds Dinkar Gupta, whose tenure concludes on March 31.

New Leadership in Key Security Roles

Alongside Date’s appointment, the ACC has named Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a 1990-batch IPS officer hailing from the Rajasthan cadre, as the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research & Development. Sharma’s tenure extends until June 30, 2026, taking over from Balaji Srivastava.

Additionally, Piyush Anand, a 1991-batch IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre and currently serving as the Special DG of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), has been tasked with leading the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for a period of two years.

Enhanced Security Measures

These appointments reflect a strategic reshuffling aimed at reinforcing key positions within India’s security apparatus. Furthermore, S Suresh, a 1995-batch IPS officer from the Kerala cadre, has been appointed as the Additional Director General of the Special Protection Group (SPG), further underlining the government’s commitment to bolstering national security efforts.
