On Thursday, an official associated with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad said that four activists of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) have been arrested from Panvel in Raigad district. He said that among those arrested is a local member of PFI’s State Extension Committee. Apart from this, a local unit secretary and two other workers are involved.

The ATS had received information about the meeting of two PFI office-bearers and some activists in Panvel. This organization has recently been banned by the Union Home Ministry. An ATS team reached Panvel, located about 50 km from Mumbai, and conducted a search, after which four PFI workers were apprehended.

After interrogation, a case was registered against the four in the Kalachowki branch of ATS in Mumbai. An FIR was registered against the accused under Section 10 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The ATS said that further investigation in the matter is on.

The government had last month banned the PFI and several of its affiliates for five years on charges of having ‘connections’ with the terrorist organization ISIS. The investigating agencies had simultaneously raided the country and arrested more than 250 people allegedly linked to the PFI.
