Mumbai: A latest update in this case, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has not got relief even today in patra chawl scam land case. A special court in Mumbai on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut till October 10. His bail plea will also be heard on October 10. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 arrested Raut (60), a Rajya Sabha member, in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of Patra Chawl in Mumbai’s Goregaon area.

Not only this, the Enforcement Directorate had filed a supplementary chargesheet last month, in which Sanjay Raut was made an accused in the case. The court took cognizance of the supplementary chargesheet in which he was named as an accused in a money laundering case. Raut had moved the Special Court for Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases for bail.

Taking cognizance of the prosecution complaint, Special Judge MG Deshpande had issued summons to all the accused in the case, including Shiv Sena MP’s aide Praveen Raut. The Shiv Sena leader’s bail hearing was adjourned till September 21 after his lawyer had said that he wanted to study the chargesheet and decide on adding additional grounds in his plea.

The ED probe pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of Patra ‘chawl’ and transaction of financial assets belonging to Raut’s wife and alleged associates. Opposing Sanjay Raut’s bail plea, the ED had told the court last week that he played a key role in the money laundering case related to Patra Chawl redevelopment and acted “behind the scenes”. The ED had also denied Raut’s contention. That the action against them has been taken out of any malice or political vendetta.

The Patra Chawl land scam started in 2007. The scam is alleged to have happened with the connivance of Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA), Praveen Raut, Guru Ashish Construction and Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL). In 2007, MHADA entrusted the work of redevelopment of Patra Chawl to Guru Ashish Construction. This construction was to be done in Siddharth Nagar of Goregaon. A total of 672 houses have been built in 47 acres of land of MHADA. After the redevelopment, Guru Ashish was to give more than three and a half thousand flats to the company. After constructing the flats for MHADA, the remaining land was to be sold to private developers. Even after 14 years, the company did not give flats to the people.
