MahaShivaratri: Ujjain breaks Ayodhya`s Guinness World Record, lights over 18 lakh diyas

New Delhi: A new 'Guinness World Record' has been created by lighting 18.8 diyas on Saturday evening near the Mahakal temple in Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh. Guinness World Record adjudicator Swapnil Dangrikar said the previous world record for the "largest display of oil lamps" was set during Diwali 2022 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, when 15.76 lakh diyas were lit.

New Delhi: A new ‘Guinness World Record’ has been created by lighting 18.8 diyas on Saturday evening near the Mahakal temple in Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh. Guinness World Record adjudicator Swapnil Dangrikar said the previous world record for the “largest display of oil lamps” was set during Diwali 2022 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, when 15.76 lakh diyas were lit.

Around 20,000 volunteers participated in the event which was mainly organized on the banks of Kshipra river. He announced that Ayodhya’s record has been broken by lighting 18.82 lakh lamps in Ujjain on Saturday evening. He said that the lamps were to be lit for at least five minutes and it was successfully done here.

The program was organized by the local administration with the help of citizens’ groups. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who reached the program along with his wife, later told that a total of 18,82,229 lamps were lit on the occasion.

The local authorities had set a target of lighting 21 lakh oil lamps to celebrate the festival of Mahashivratri on Saturday and they managed to light 18.82 lakh lamps. Last year, 11,71,078 earthen lamps were lit on Mahashivratri in Ujjain.

In Varanasi till 6 pm on Saturday, more than seven and a half lakh people visited Kashi Vishwanath. This is the record of maximum number of devotees in a single day. Last year 6 lakh people had darshan on Shivratri. At the same time, about seven lakh devotees have reached Ujjain’s Mahakal temple. The process of darshan continued till late night at both the places.
