New Delhi: The Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) of Kerala has decided to grant 60 days of maternity leave to degree and postgraduate students aged 18 and above, and the university will also allow them to continue their studies without interruption.
According to a press release from the university, the decision was taken on Friday during a Syndicate meeting presided over by Pro Vice Chancellor C T Aravinda Kumar.
It stated that the Syndicate had accepted the committee’s recommendations after conducting its own investigation into the matter.
Maternity leave may be used before or after delivery, but is only permitted for the first or second pregnancy and only once over the duration of a course, according to the institution.
The period of leave will include both public and ordinary holidays, and no other leave can be combined with it, the release said.
In cases of abortion, tubectomy, etc., a 14-day leave will be granted, it stated.
To ensure that their studies are not jeopardised by pregnancy, those taking maternity leave during a semester will be allowed to register for exams in the same semester but will write them as supplementary exams alongside regular students in the following semester.
However, they will not lose a semester after the end of their maternity leave; they can continue their studies in the ongoing semester with their own batch, the release said.
