Mahesh Kumawat, 6th accused in Parliament security breach case, detained by Delhi Police

New Delhi: On December 13, two men managed to breach the security of the Lok Sabha and release colored smoke canisters. This dramatic act led to the arrest of five individuals in connection with the case. Today Delhi police made the sixth arrest in the Parliament security breach case. Mahesh Kumawat was taken into custody today for allegedly helping the ‘mastermind’ Lalit Jha escape from Delhi.

Mahesh Kumawat, a resident of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, was one of the accomplices in the conspiracy hatched by mastermind Lalit Jha and other accused. So far, six people have been arrested — Lalit Jha, Mahesh, Neelam, Sagar Sharma, Manoranjan D, Amol Shinde.

Sources said police are likely to seek the Parliament’s permission to recreate the December 13 incident that unfolded on the anniversary of the 2001 attack on it.

The main conspirator Lalit Jha had fled from Delhi after the incident at Mahesh’s hideout in Rajasthan. Mahesh also joined Lalit in destroying the mobile phones of the four accused who were initially arrested. Mahesh was also in constant contact with Neelam Devi, who was detained for protesting outside the Parliament while their group members entered the Lok Sabha.

Both Lalit and Mahesh had surrendered together at the police station in the New Delhi area on Thursday. Lalit’s arrest was recorded on Friday. Mahesh’s cousin Kailash was also questioned, but the police have not arrested him so far.

Lalit Jha, who is a resident of West Bengal, was sent to seven-day judicial custody on Friday after his arrest last night. Police claimed in the Patiala House court that he admitted that the accused met many times to hatch the conspiracy to breach Parliament security.

Besides, he was also required to be interrogated to ascertain whether the accused had association with any enemy country or terrorist organisation, police said.
