The Yadav family has occupied the Mainpuri seat for several decades. Dimple Yadav will now handle the political legacy of Mulayam Singh Yadav. Voting will be held on December 5 and the results will be declared on December 8. Mainpuri is a Samajwadi Party stronghold and it was from this seat that Mulayam was first elected an MP in 1996.
Dimple Yadav, 44, contested her first election in 2009, when Akhilesh Yadav left the Firozabad seat. In this by-election, Dimple Yadav had to face defeat by famous actor and politician Raj Babbar. After this, by-elections were held in the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in 2012, in which Dimple Yadav won unopposed.
After this, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Dimple Yadav contested and won from Kannauj, but had to face defeat in 2019. Subrata Pathak of BJP defeated Dimple Yadav by about 10 thousand votes. Now Akhilesh Yadav has fielded Dimple from Mainpuri. SP has been winning this seat since 1996.
Apart from Mainpuri, bypolls will also held for Rampur Sadar and Khatauli Assembly constituencies. The Rampur seat fell vacant after its incumbent MLA Azam Khan’s membership of the state assembly was cancelled following his conviction in a hate speech case. He has been sentenced for three years. The Khatauli seat fell vacant after the conviction of BJP’s Vikram Saini in a case.
