Major security lapse at Delhi airport: Intruder illegally enters airfield; arrested from tarmac

New Delhi: The security breach at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has raised serious concerns among the authorities. The incident occurred on January 27, when an intruder managed to breach the airport security and enter the airspace. The breach was detected by an alert Air India pilot, who spotted the intruder as the aircraft landed and headed towards the parking bay.

A man, hails from Haryana, was detained on Saturday after he scaled the perimeter wall of the airport and entered the airfield prompting swift action by the security forces. The incident took place at a time when the national capital was witnessing Republic Day celebrations. The pilot of an Air India flight noticed the man at around 11:30 pm and informed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) which later directed the CISF, responsible for the security of airports.

The pilot immediately alerted air traffic controllers about the safety breach. After the alert, the Airport Operation Control Center was informed. This prompt action led to the immediate intervention of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which apprehended the intruder.

The incident is particularly worrying as it occurred a day after Republic Day, a period when the airport was on high alert due to tight security for Republic Day celebrations and VVIP movement. The breach has raised questions over the effectiveness of security measures at one of India’s busiest airports.

An internal committee is currently investigating the breach. Officials are taking this incident with serious concern. In a related context, Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia had recently imposed heavy fine on Mumbai Airport and IndiGo for security violations where passengers were eating while sitting in the apron area of the airport.
