Malayalam actress and director Ambika Rao, passes away

Kochi: Noted Malayalam actress and associate director Ambika Rao breathed her last on Monday night (June 27), due to sudden cardiac arrest. She was suffering from kidney-related diseases and was undergoing treatment for a while. She was 58.

Ambika rose to prominence in the film “Kumbalangi Nights.” According to a report, she passed away at around 10.30 pm at a private hospital in Ernakulam. She had been getting treatment after testing COVID positive.

She made her debut in the film industry as an assistant director with the 2002 release of Krishna Gopalakrishna. She has been associated with the film industry for about two decades and has done the job of assistant director for Mammootty starrers ‘Rajamanikyam’ and ‘Thommanum Makkalum’, and the Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer ‘Vellinakshathram’, and so on.

Ambika Rao has acted in several films, including Dileep starrer blockbuster ‘Meesha Madhavan’, ‘Salt and Pepper’, and the recent releases ‘Anuraga Karikkin Vellam’, ‘Thamasha’, and ‘Vellam’.

Ambika Rao reached the pinnacle of Malayalam film in Madhu C Narayanan’s directorial ‘Kumbalangi Nights’. Released in 2019, Kumbalangi Nights featured Ambika Rao as the mother of Baby and Simmy, played by Anna Ben and Grace Antony, respectively.

She is survived by her children, Rahul and Sohan.

With the demise of Ambika Rao, shock runs in the Malayalam film industry. Several stars and technicians mourned the untimely passing away of Ambika Rao.

Prithviraj Sukumaran took to his social media handles and said, “Rest in peace Ambika Chechi.” Kunchacko Boban also penned a note paying homage to the late actress.
