Darjeeling have never acted as a political arena.

But Mamata Banerjee is doing everything ossible to make it one by challenging the hegemony of hill parties, which have been the kingpin of politics here since Independence.

For the last 15 days or so, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), the dominant party in the hills are not giving each other a single inch.

All this started with the last month municipal elections in four hill municipalities — Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik.. The results were historical to say the least, for the first time, a mainstream political party got majority in the Mirik municipality.

While the GJM was victorious in the other three municipalities, the TMC’s vote percentage jumped quite a bit.

Mamata Banerjee reached Darjeeling yesterday amid much drama. As she got to Mirik to attend a victory rally there, few men started chanting slogans against her and flashed black flags. But Mamata challenged them to come forward and meet face to face, they ran away.

At the Mirik rally, she was brutal on GJM Bimal Gurung.

As a matter of fact, she threatened to investigate the funds management of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration.

Mamata will be staying in the hills for the next few days and on June 8, there is going to be a cabinet meeting as well.
