Doha: During the match between Portugal and Uruguay, a protester carrying a rainbow flag and wearing a T-shirt with the words “Respect for Iranian Woman” ran on the ground on Monday. He remained there for about 30 seconds, and then security personnel nabbed him and escorted him off the ground. AGI, an Italian news agency, identified the protestor as Mario Ferri.

On the front of his shirt, “Save Ukraine” was also written to attract the people’s attention towards the war-torn nation. Portugal player Ruben Neves said, “We know what is happening around this World Cup… “It’s a normal thing to happen.”

The protester had done a similar thing earlier on several occasions, including during the 2014 football World Cup held in Brazil, where he had shown sympathy with the children living in acute poverty.

Qatar has banned the use of the rainbow flag at the World Cup, where homosexuality is illegal. Before the start of the mega event, several groups made a lot of hue and cry regarding gay rights and allowing liquor in the stadium during the match. Notably, the Qatari government rejected both because alcoholic drinks are not permitted in the country.

The captains of seven European nations had earlier planned to wear rainbow-themed anti-discrimination armbands during the tournament as part of a campaign for diversity. But FIFA was firm in its decision to take disciplinary action against such captains, including yellow cards.

Britain’s sports minister, Stuart Andrew, has been mulling wearing the armband in his presence during England’s clash with Wales on Tuesday.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wore the “One Love” armband last week while sitting next to FIFA president Gianni Infantino for Germany’s shock 2-1 defeat by Japan.

Football fans complained that they were told to take off their rainbow-colored clothing.
