Bijnor, UP: A shocking incident has come to light in New York. Mandeep Kaur, a 30-year-old Indian-origin woman committed suicide on August 3 in USA. Domestic violence is said to be the cause of Mandeep’s death. Mandeep’s husband Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu was harassing her for the last 8 years. Both Kaur’s 4 and 6-year-old girls are currently in Sandhu’s custody. Both the girls are still alive. Before committing suicide, Mandeep Kaur had recorded a video and shared it on social media now that leads to massive outrage pm Sikh community in US.

Mandeep’s family is from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, while her husband and their daughters live in Richmond Hill, New York. The news of Mandeep’s painful death reached the world when a page named The Kaur Movement wrote in detail about the abuse that happened to him.

Here the family, broken by the loss of the daughter, has sought the help of the Government of India to bring Mandeep’s body and get the custody of his two daughters. Mandeep, daughter of Jaspal Singh, a resident of Taharpur village of Najibabad in Bijnor district, was married in 2015 to Ranjodhvir Singh Sandhu, a resident of the neighboring village of Badiya. Sandhu used to drive a truck in America. Mandeep hanged himself on August 3 at his Richmond Hill residence in New York.

The victim’s sister Kuldeep Kaur revealed the horrific times Mandeep tortured her for almost eight years since the day she got married. Kuldeep Kaur said, My sister was married in February 2015. Soon they moved to New York and he started torturing her. He wanted a son and wanted Rs 50 lakh in dowry.

On August 5, Jaspal has filed a case against Sandhu in Najibabad police station against husband, father-in-law, mother, brother for abetment to suicide and domestic violence. He said that through the media, we have asked the Government of India for help in bringing Mandeep’s body from New York to India. We are also demanding the safety and return of Dhevatis Alisha and Amreen.

The video clip taken from the CCTV camera of the house is going viral on various platforms of internet media. In view of the misery happening with the mother, Mandeep’s six and four year old daughters are speaking in Punjabi – Papa, na maro mamma nun…. This thing is tearing the liver. Seeing this scene in the video clip, many comments are coming in expressing anger. In another video, Mandeep is said to have endured eight years of her husband’s extramarital affair and daily beatings in a state of intoxication in the hope that one day he would change. But now I can’t bear the beatings everyday. Accusing her husband and in-laws of forcing her to commit suicide, she says that father, I am going to die, please forgive me.

Mandeep’s elder brother Sandeep Singh said, “Lakhs of comments are coming daily on various platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram asking for justice for Mandeep. Former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, head of women’s organizations in Punjab Manisha Gulati, film industry personalities Neeru Bajwa, Sargun Mehta and countless big personalities of the country and the world were also seen standing in the line of justice with them. According to sister Kuldeep Kaur, Mandeep was suffering from harassment for eight years after marriage. The in-laws wanted a son from her and were demanding a dowry of fifty lakh rupees.

The fury of New Yorkers and Sikh organizations in New York, apart from units of The Kaur Movement and the Women’s Welfare Association, has engulfed the Internet media. People from many countries are campaigning for justice on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. People also demonstrated outside Mandeep’s house in Richmond Hill, New York. Some workers from Punjab also went to Bijnor and met his family.

Later in the day, the consulate general of India in New York tweeted, “We are in touch with the US authorities […] We stand ready to render all assistance.”
