Manipur: Curfew to be relaxed in Churachandpur today, relaxation to be given from 7 to 10 am

Manipur: Curfew has been relaxed in violence-hit Manipur’s Churachandpur district and other areas so that people can buy essential goods. According to a notification, the total curfew that prohibits people from leaving their homes will be relaxed for three hours on Sunday morning so that people can buy essential items like medicine and food.

The administration has imposed curfew under Section 144 of CrPC, while it will be relaxed from 7 am to 10 am. On Saturday also two hours relaxation was given from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Sharing a copy of the notification on Saturday night, N Biren Singh tweeted that with the improvement in the law and order situation in Churachandpur district and after discussions between the state government and various stakeholders, I am happy to share that below Curfew will be partially relaxed as per the details given.

A notification issued by District Magistrate of Churachandpur Sharath Chandra Aroju said that the exemption will be reviewed and notified based on assessment of the existing law and order situation.

The march was called by the students’ organization ‘All Tribal Students Union of Manipur’ (ATSUM) in protest against the demand of inclusion of the Meiti community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. Violence erupted during the protest called ‘Adivasi Ekta March’. The curfew was imposed on May 3 following violent clashes between tribals and members of the majority Meitei community, which have so far displaced thousands and left at least 54 dead.

Meites make up about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley. Tribals – Nagas and Kukis – constitute another 40 percent of the population and live mostly in hilly districts.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said that peace committees will be formed in every assembly constituency to ensure implementation of peace initiatives at the ground level. The CM made the announcement after presiding over an all-party meeting on the prevailing situation in the violence-hit state.

He said that an all-political party met to discuss the current situation in Manipur and work collectively to bring peace and stability in the state. The CM further said that during the meeting, it was resolved to appeal for peace in the state and encourage all citizens to refrain from any action that may lead to violence or instability.
