The incident occurred around 7 pm on Tuesday, prompting the deployment of four columns of the Assam Rifles and the intervention of the Army.

Manipur Police Officer Abducted. Manipur Police, via a statement, reported that Singh, posted in the operations wing, was admitted to the hospital, and his condition is stable. The attack was a retaliation, as the officer had previously arrested six individuals associated with the group for alleged vehicle theft.

The Meira Paibis, a Meitei women’s group, had protested and blocked roads demanding the release of the arrested members. The violence underscores the ongoing unrest in Manipur since May 3, 2023, with over 180 casualties reported, primarily stemming from protests related to the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community, contrasting the tribals in the hill districts.
