Manish Sisodia Denied Interim Bail in Delhi Liquor Scam Case, Court Reserves Decision

New Delhi : In a setback for AAP leader Manish Sisodia, the Delhi court has refrained from granting interim bail in the ongoing Delhi liquor scam case, deferring its decision until April 30. Sisodia, arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26, 2023, and subsequently by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a related money laundering case, sought bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections.

Legal Battle Continues: Bail Hearing Reserved

Despite fervent pleas for interim bail, the Delhi court opted to reserve its decision on Sisodia’s plea, prolonging the legal saga surrounding his alleged involvement in the liquor scam. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the charges against Sisodia and the complexity of the legal proceedings.

CBI Opposition: Concerns Over Influencing Investigation

Opposing Sisodia’s bail plea, the CBI raised concerns about potential interference with ongoing investigations and witness tampering if bail were granted. Citing societal ramifications of economic crimes, the probe agency emphasized the need to uphold the integrity of the legal process.

Notice Issued: ED and CBI Directed to Respond

Previously, on April 12, the court issued notices to both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in response to Sisodia’s plea. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja directed the central probe agencies to submit their responses by April 20, reflecting the court’s commitment to a fair and comprehensive adjudication process.

Allegations of Irregularities: Excise Policy Modifications Scrutinized

The CBI and ED have alleged irregularities in the modification of the Delhi excise policy, including undue favors to license holders, waiver or reduction of license fees, and extensions granted without proper authorization. Accusations of diverting illegal gains and falsifying records further compound the gravity of the allegations against Sisodia and other accused officials.

Political Implications: Sisodia Named AAP’s Star Campaigner

Despite his legal challenges, Manish Sisodia retains a prominent role in AAP’s electoral strategy, being named among the party’s star campaigners for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Gujarat. Alongside incarcerated leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Satyendar Jain, Sisodia’s continued involvement in political activities underscores the intersection of legal battles and political engagements in India’s dynamic landscape.
