Paris: The stage is set for the four contestants to battle it out to emerge as champions in Paris. Rafael Nadal of Spain and Alexander Zverev of Germany have already confirmed their berths in the semi-finals.
On Wednesday, Casper Ruud defeated Danish Holger Rune in the Roland Garros quarterfinals, winning 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-3. Ruud became the first Norwegian to move to the semi-final stage of any Grand Slam title.
The fourth player who secured a berth in the last four stages is Marin Cilic of Croatia. Cilic kept the Croatian legacy alive on Wednesday, by firing 33 aces and, in the end, beating seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev in a marathon five-setter 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10/2) to advance to the semis and face Casper Ruud for a place in the final.
Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud, the two big-hitting players, are gearing up to play their first semi-final clash at the French Open.
Because of his extensive Grand Slam experience, Cilic is the favourite to beat Ruud in the semi-finals. He bagged the 2014 US Open title and needed four hours and 10 minutes to knock out Rublev in the quarter-final encounter. Rublev has the dubious distinction of losing all five of his quarter-final clashes at the Grand Slams.
Cilic is in tremendous form in this year’s French Open, having already defeated world number two Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round. The Croat is now known as the dark horse at the 2022 French Open. But we have to wait till Sunday for this.
Iga Swiatek, the World No. 1 women’s tennis star, is slowly but surely inching closer to winning her second Grand Slam singles title. She is gearing up to meet 20th-seeded Daria Kasatkina in the 2022 French Open semifinals on Thursday at Roland Garros in Paris.
Swiatek has been in remarkable form, winning 33 straight matches. She is just two matches away from emerging as champion at Ronald Garros for the second time. Daria Kasatkina, 25, will play World No. 1 in the semi-finals, her first Grand Slam singles last four match.
Swiatek and Kasatkina are set to win the match and move on to the final. The other semi-final in the women’s section will be played between Coco Gauff and Martina Trevisan.
Tennis fans have an opportunity to watch thrilling matches at the historic Roland Garros in the next three days. So, it is a jam-packed schedule for the French Open tennis.
