Massive fire erupts at Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, thousands leaves homeless

No casualty has been reported so far in the fire that broke out at the Balukhali Camp in Cox's Bazar, Fire Department official Emdadul Haque said. Rohingya refugees are working with the volunteer agency and its partners to put out the fire, but it gave no further details. Bangladesh: A major incident of fire has come to light in Bangladesh. A massive fire broke out on Sunday in a refugee camp packed with Rohingya Muslims in southern Bangladesh, leaving thousands homeless. An official of the United Nations and the fire department gave this information.

No casualty has been reported so far in the fire that broke out at the Balukhali camp in Cox’s Bazar, Fire Department official Emdadul Haque said. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Bangladesh tweeted that Rohingya refugees were working with the volunteer agency and its partners to put out the fire, but gave no further details.

“Some 2,000 shelters have been burnt, leaving about 12,000 forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals shelterless,” according to Bangladesh’s refugee commissioner.

More than one million Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh during the past few decades. Of these, 7.4 lakh reached Bangladesh in August 2017, when the Myanmar army began a brutal crackdown. More than one million Rohingya refugees are currently living in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has also sought India’s cooperation in recent years for the peaceful repatriation of Rohingyas who have been forced to seek refuge in the country to escape persecution in Myanmar.
