Mexico: 6 people killed in bar shooting during Independence day celebrations

Mexico: At least six people were killed in a shooting at a bar in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, a region hit by gang violence, authorities said Saturday.

Mexico: At least six people were killed in a shooting at a bar in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, a region hit by gang violence, authorities said Saturday.

The Jalisco prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the incident occurred late Friday in the city of Teocaltiche during celebrations for the anniversary of Mexican independence.

The statement said, “Several people were shot at once in the Maravilas neighborhood.” After originally reporting four deaths, prosecutors confirmed the death toll to six on Saturday.

Jalisco has been rocked by violence linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s largest criminal groups.

There was another shooting earlier this month in Teocaltiche, north of Jalisco, the capital of Guadalajara, in which two police officers were killed.

More than 340,000 killings and nearly 100,000 disappearances have been recorded since the federal government launched a military-backed anti-narcotics campaign in late 2006, the majority of whom were linked to criminal organizations.
