Millet: A Sustainable Solution for Future Food Crises, Says U.P. Chief Minister

In a recent event, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath underscored the historical significance of millet, or ‘Sri Anna,’ dating back to the Vedic era. He emphasized its potential role in mitigating future food crises. Adityanath inaugurated a state-level exhibition and workshop on millet, stressing the need for research to enhance its productivity. He expressed contentment that millets have now become a staple in many households, emphasizing their vital contribution to a natural and healthier lifestyle.

During the event, Adityanath recognized 35 farmer producer organizations dedicated to millet cultivation. He also provided substantial financial aid to five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (agricultural science centers) in Jhansi, Lalitpur, Banda, Hamirpur, and Ghazipur, supporting the establishment of millet processing plants. The Chief Minister commended these organizations for their efforts in training and encouraging farmers to embrace millet farming.

Adityanath highlighted the decline in coarse grain production in the past due to population growth and limited research. He encouraged a return to natural habitats and lifestyles, emphasizing millets’ potential to play a significant role. He envisioned Uttar Pradesh emerging as a leading hub for Sri Anna production in the country, acknowledging the diverse and innovative millet-based products that have now become integral to people’s daily diets.

Prominent figures such as State Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, MSME Minister Rakesh Sachan, and Minister of State for Agriculture Baldev Singh Aulakh, among others, graced the occasion. The event served as a platform to celebrate millets’ resurgence, marking them as a sustainable solution for future food challenges.
