In a disturbing incident in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, a mob attacked a 38-year-old woman from Nepal, suspecting her of child lifting. The assault occurred as she was on an evening walk and offered chocolates to a child she met on the streets of Lower Haflong. The situation escalated when she tried to give some cash to the child, leading to suspicions among onlookers.
The mob turned violent, thrashing the Nepali woman and even assaulting police personnel who intervened to rescue her. Seven individuals, including three women, have been apprehended in connection with the incident. The injured police officers were taken to Haflong Civil Hospital for treatment, with one officer in critical condition and transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Identified as Kamala Dahal, the victim had come from Nepal to visit her younger sister in Haflong. Following the attack, Dahal was rushed to Haflong Civil Hospital for medical attention, where her family lodged a complaint at the local police station.
The arrested individuals, residents of Haflong town and its vicinity, face multiple charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including unlawful assembly, criminal force against a woman, attempt to murder, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt. Additional charges were added under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar highlighted the prevalence of such incidents, cautioning against succumbing to rumors and emphasizing the need for vigilance, particularly regarding individuals with autism and other conditions who may be wrongly targeted.
This incident underscores the importance of addressing misinformation and fostering community awareness to prevent unjust acts of violence against innocent individuals.
