Monsoon to advance towards Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Northeast in next 48 hours: IMD

New Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that Monsoon will advance into remaining parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and parts of Northeast in the next 48 hours. The Southwest Monsoon entered India with its onset over Kerala on Thursday, a week after the normal date of June 1, the IMD said.

New Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that Monsoon will advance into remaining parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and parts of Northeast in the next 48 hours. The Southwest Monsoon entered India with its onset over Kerala on Thursday, a week after the normal date of June 1, the IMD said.

Speaking to media, on forecast for further advance of Monsoon in the country, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said, Southwest Monsoon has reached Kerala today. Monsoon usually reaches Kerala by June 1 but this time it arrived on June 8. There has been a delay of seven days. Kerala received good rains for two days and South Tamil Nadu has similar conditions.”

“In the next 48 hours, Monsoon will further advance into some areas of Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Besides this, it will also cover remaining parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka. Monsoon is also likely to cover northeastern states in next 48 hours. It is likely to grow further.”

Elaborating on Cyclone Biparjoy, he said, “A Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy is moving slowly northwards in the Arabian Sea. It is expected to move northwards for some time after which it will move northwards.” Will change its direction towards the west.

In its earlier bulletin, the IMD said that the cyclone will gradually intensify during next 48 hours and move nearly north-northwest during next 3 days.

“VSCS BIPARJOY lay centered over east-central Arabian Sea near latitude 13.6N and longitude 66.0E at 2330 hrs IST on 07 Jun 2023, about 870 km west-southwest of Goa, 930 km southwest of Mumbai. It Will gradually intensify further during next 48 hours, and move nearly north-northwestwards during next 3 days, tweeted the IMD.

The IMD had earlier said that fishermen are advised not to venture into such cyclone-hit areas in the Arabian Sea and those who are at sea are advised to return to the coast.
