Morbi tragedy: Over 3,000 tickets sold on day of bridge collapse, finds damning report

The FSL report of Morbi bridge has revealed corruption and criminal negligence by Oreva and Municipal Corporation. Oreva Group, which had the contract for the maintenance, operation and security of the bridge. On October 30, the day the bridge collapsed, 3,165 tickets were issued.

New Delhi: The FSL report of Morbi bridge has revealed corruption and criminal negligence by Oreva and Municipal Corporation. Oreva Group, which had the contract for the maintenance, operation and security of the bridge. On October 30, the day the bridge collapsed, 3,165 tickets were issued. Its load bearing capacity has never been assessed.

According to the report, the guards and ticket collectors employed by Oreva were daily wage labourers. The guards were never told about safety protocols and how many people should be allowed on the bridge. The cables had rusted. The angles were broken and the bolts connecting the cables to the anchors were loosened.

On October 30, more than 135 people lost their lives in the collapse of a British-era bridge over the Machchu river in Morbi, Gujarat. On October 31, the police arrested nine people, including four from the Oreva group that manages the Morbi bridge. A case has been registered against the companies involved in the maintenance and operation of the bridge.
