MP govt renames Bhopal’s Islam Nagar as ‘Jagdishpur’ with immediate effect

Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh government on Thursday issued a notice in which the name of Islam Nagar village in Bhopal district was changed to Jagdishpur with immediate effect. On Wednesday, the MP administration, in an official release, declared the changes and mentioned the change in the name with immediate effect.

“In pursuance of no objection conveyed by Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs….., the State Government hereby, change the name of village of Islam Nagar District Bhopal as Jagdishpur with immediate effect,” the order said.

Islam Nagar was actually once the capital of the princely state of Bhopal. It is about 15 kms from Bhopal. It is said that Aurangzeb’s fugitive soldier Dost Mohammad Khan changed its name from Jagdishpur to Islam Nagar after capturing it 308 years ago.Islamnagar was once known as Jagdishpur, which was founded by local Rajput chieftains.

Dost Mohammad Khan, the founder of the princely state of Bhopal, titled it ‘Islam Nagar’ in the 18th century. The Shivraj government had also changed the name of Hoshangabad district to Narmadapuram. After this decision of the government, there was a lot of criticism from the opposition parties. It was said from the Congress side that the decision to change the name was politically motivated.
