MP: Revenue official crushed to death by tractor-trolley involved in illegal sand mining in Shahdol district

Madhya Pradesh: In Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district, a local revenue department official, known as a Patwari, lost his life after he was crushed by a tractor-trolley engaged in illegal transportation of sand. The incident came to light around midnight on Saturday, following which the police took immediate action and the driver of the vehicle was arrested.

The patrol team, including Patwari Prasanna Singh, stopped the tractor-trolley near Son river in Gopalpur area, a famous hotspot for illegal sand mining activities. As Singh attempted to stop the tractor-trolley, the driver deliberately crushed it, resulting in Singh’s instant death. The accused driver fled from the spot with the vehicle.

On Sunday morning, Shahdol Superintendent of Police Kumar Prateek said an immediate investigation was launched which led to the identification and arrest of the driver, Shubham Vishwakarma (25). A case has been registered against Vishwakarma, a resident of Maihar district, located about 8 km from the crime scene, under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The collector said the tragedy came to light when Singh and his colleagues revisited the site later to assess the situation. The seized tractor has been linked to its owner. District Collector Vandana Vaidya revealed that the incident occurred despite recent efforts to address illegal sand mining in the area. A joint team of officials from the Revenue, Mining Department and police had conducted the inspection on November 23 and in the process seized the illegally mined sand.
