MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary passes away due to heart attack during Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab

Congress MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh died of a heart attack during Bharat Jodo Yatra on Saturday in Punjab's Phillaur.

Ludhiana: In yet another tragic incident, Congress MP from Jalandhar Chaudhary Santokh Singh passed away on Saturday morning during Bharat Jodo Yatra in Phillaur, Punjab. He was walking with Rahul Gandhi in the yatra, when suddenly his health deteriorated and his heartbeat increased.

The Congress leader was taken to Virk Hospital in Phagwara, where he was declared brought dead.

As soon as the news was received, Rahul Gandhi left for Bharat Jodo Yatra and reached the hospital.

Meanwhile, Bharat Jodo Yatra commenced on September 7 last year from Kanyakumari and will culminate on January 30 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar.

Congress leaders Rana Gurjit Singh and Vijay Inder Singla have confirmed his death. Singh was a former cabinet minister of Punjab and a member of parliament from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency. Chaudhary Santokh Singh won the 2014 and 2019 general elections.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said Mr Chaudhary’s death is a “great blow to the party and organisation”.

“Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the untimely passing away of our MP, Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary. His loss is a great blow to the party and organisation. In this hour of grief, my heart goes out to his family, friends and followers. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Santokh Singh Chaudhary, aged 76, Congress MP from Jalandhar, passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest during the Bharat Jodo Yatra this morning. We extend our deepest condolences to his family. There will be some changes in schedule of the yatra which will be shared shortly.


Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also expressed his anguish over his death in a tweet in Punjabi.
