Mumbai : In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Mumbai International Airport has announced the temporary closure of its two runways today. From 11 am to 5 pm, both the primary and secondary runways will undergo pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work.
The closure, a routine practice undertaken yearly, aims to ensure passenger safety and maintain operational efficiency. This proactive approach allows the airport to address any wear and tear on the runways, ensuring they are in optimal condition for the monsoon influx.
The primary runway, 09/27, and the secondary runway, 14/32, will remain non-operational during the designated six-hour period. Despite the closure, the airport has assured that flight movements will not be impacted, thanks to meticulous planning and communication with airlines and stakeholders.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued well in advance, enabling airlines to adjust their schedules accordingly. This proactive communication minimizes inconvenience to passengers and ensures seamless operations during the maintenance period.
The maintenance activities include inspecting the runway surface for wear and tear, a crucial step in strengthening the airside infrastructure. The airport’s extensive network of runways, taxiways, and aprons spanning over 1,033 acres undergoes rigorous evaluation to uphold safety standards.
Following the completion of maintenance work, all flight operations are set to resume as usual post 5 pm. This reassures passengers that any disruptions during the closure period are temporary, with normal operations swiftly restored thereafter.
