Mumbai: Alleged anti-national activities, TISS suspends PhD student for 2 years

Mumbai: Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, suspended a PhD student from the college for two years for his involvement in anti-national activities. Student organization Progressive Students Forum alleged that the student was involved in the protest march held in January against the anti-student policies of the Central Government, due to which he has been suspended from the college for two years. However, the administration claimed “serious violation of the disciplinary code made for students”.

According to sources report, the suspension order issued on April 18 also banned student Ramdas Princi Sivanandan from all TISS campuses and cited the show cause notice sent to him on March 7, in which he was barred from other activities. His participation in the march with the list has been questioned.

Show cause notice issued on March 7

Regarding the show cause notice sent to student Ramdas Princi Sivanandan, it has been said that a committee formed after this notice presented its recommendations on April 17. In which Ramdas has been banned from coming to the campus of TISS for the next two years.

The notice issued on March 7 said that Ramdas has misused the name of the institute by participating in the protest under the banner of PSF-TISS. Ramdas created a wrong impression about the institute by using the name. Which comes under the Ministry of Education.

In January this year, the Parliament march against the National Education Policy 2020 was organized under the banner of United Students of India, a joint platform of 16 student organizations with the slogan “Save Education, Reject India, Reject BJP”.

Regarding this matter, student organization PSF has said that “The march was an attempt to raise the voice of students against BJP and its anti-student policies in the form of National Education Policy 2020. In such a situation, by suspending one student and stopping his studies, two Efforts have been made to prevent entry to the campus for years.

Ramdas, a PhD student belonging to the Dalit community, is the former general secretary of PSF. Currently, he is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Student Federation of India, the student wing of PSF. He is also the Joint Secretary of SFI Maharashtra State Committee.

Objection was expressed on social media post

The institute, in its March 7 show cause notice, had also taken exception to Ramdas’s social media post from January, which had called for students to attend the screening of the documentary “Ram Ke Naam” on January 26 and described it as “insulting “Prateek”. PSF says that it has been officially screened several times at TISS. This documentary is also available on YouTube for public viewing and has also been shown on Doordarshan.

However, the current TISS administration wants to condemn those voices in the online sphere as well. The PSF alleged that the administration’s actions highlight its support for the ruling BJP government at the expense of the future of Dalit students.
