Aligarh: In a landmark appointment, Professor Naima Khatoon has been named the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), marking the first time in the institution’s 123-year history that a woman has held this prestigious position. The Ministry of Education confirmed Ms. Khatoon’s appointment, with approval from President Droupadi Murmu, the Visitor of the university.

Key Highlights:

Trailblazing Career: Naima Khatoon embarked on her professional journey at AMU as a lecturer in 1988, specializing in psychology. Over the years, she ascended the academic ladder, achieving the positions of Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2006.

Prior to her appointment as Vice Chancellor, she served as the Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Psychology and later as Principal at Women’s College.

International Experience: Beyond her contributions to AMU, Ms. Khatoon enriched her academic experience by teaching at the National University of Rwanda in Central Africa for a year. She also held various administrative roles within AMU, showcasing her multifaceted talents.

Academic Excellence: Holding a PhD in Political Psychology, Naima Khatoon conducted her doctoral research at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, and AMU. Her scholarly pursuits have taken her to esteemed institutions worldwide, where she presented her research findings.

Prolific Scholar: Apart from her administrative duties, Ms. Khatoon is a prolific writer and researcher, having authored, co-authored, and edited numerous books and papers on diverse topics within psychology. Her expertise spans clinical, health, applied social, and spiritual psychology.

Recognition and Awards: In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Naima Khatoon was honored with the prestigious Papa Mian Padma Bhushan Best Girl Award for her all-round excellence, underscoring her dedication and contributions to academia and society.

Naima Khatoon’s appointment as Vice Chancellor not only breaks barriers but also paves the way for greater gender inclusivity and representation in the leadership of educational institutions.
