Prayagraj: The head of a top religious body – Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, Narendra Giri, allegedly committed suicide on Monday in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj town, the police said today. The dead body was brought down from the noose by the followers of Mahant ji by breaking the door. A suicide note was also recovered from the site, content of which establish that Mahant ji was disturbed by the torture of his disciple Anand Giri, hence, he took the extreme step to commit suicide. Anand has been detained from Haridwar in connection with the suicide case, the police said.
According to IG, Prayagraj, KP Singh, the late seer had mentioned the name of Anand Giri, one of his disciples, prominently in the suicide note and had accused him of mental harassment. Names of two more persons were also mentioned in the note.
“We are reading the note. He expressed he was upset. He also wrote what should be done with the ashram after his passing, in the form of a will,” senior Prayagraj police official KP Singh told reporters this evening.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and other political leaders tweeted their condolences.
“The death of Akhara Parishad president Shri Narendra Giri ji is extremely sad. While devoted to spiritual traditions, he played a big role in connecting many streams of Sant Samaj together. May the Lord give him a place at your feet. Om shanti,” PM Modi tweeted.

According to police officials, Narendra Giri, who headed one of the largest religious bodies of saints in the country, was found dead at his home earlier this evening. Soon after the incident the UP police initiated investigation and found a 12 page long suicide note that mentions late seer’s disciple Anand Giri and two more persons -Adya Tiwari and his son Sandip Tiwari’s names in the suicide note recovered from the spot.
In the 12-page note the seer had reportedly expressed his pain saying that he had lived all his life with respect and honour and he could not live without it anymore.
In the past also, Mahant Narendra Giri and Anand Giri had been in controversy. However, his disciple had later sought apologies from his guru. The letter regarding expulsion and settlement of Anand Giri by Mahant Narendra Giri in the previous dispute is attached below:
“The death of president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, Mahant Narendra Giri, is an irreparable loss for the spiritual world. I pray to Lord Ram to provide his spirit a place at his feet and give strength to his followers to bear this pain,” UP CM Yogi Adityanath tweeted.
The UP Congress unit and the BJP chief JP Nadda also tweeted his condolences.
The 72-year-old seer was elected the All India Akahara Parishad chief for a second term in October 2019 and was a highly influential and politicians of all affiliations used to visit him in Prayagraj.
