New York: From next year i.e. 2023, there will be a Diwali holiday in New York City Public School. Mayor Eric Adams announced this on Thursday. Adams, along with New York Assembly member Jennifer Rajkumar, introduced legislation to recognize Diwali and New York City School Chancellor David Banks, according to reports. “The time has come to recognize the more than 200,000 New Yorkers of Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights,” Rajkumar said.

Another assembly person said, “”People have said that New York City’s school calendar doesn’t have enough room for the Diwali school holiday. “Well, my legislation makes the room.” Rajkumar further said that the new school schedule will still have 180 days. Rajkumar called Adams ‘a Hindu mayor’ in a lighthearted reference to his plant-based diet and meditation practice.

During the conference, Adams called the decision the end of a long wait for the Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities. “We’re going to encourage kids to learn about Diwali,” Adams said. Rajkumar said Anniversary Day is an ‘obscure and antiquated day’ and said Diwali is celebrated by a large number of residents in the city.

“We’re going to start talking to them about what the festival of lights is and how you light up within yourself,” he said. The mayor said, “When we accept Diwali we are accepting the light that is within us. That light can clearly dispel darkness.”
