NIA carries out searches in 17 locations across seven states in Bengaluru prison Radicalisation case

New Delhi: On Tuesday, a spokesperson of the agency said that National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting searches across seven states in connection with a case related to radicalisation of prisoners by a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist in a Bengaluru prison.

According to the information the searches are underway in as many as 17 locations. Raids have been initiated in Bengaluru, Tamil Nadu, and other states today, targeting locations associated with suspects involved in a terror conspiracy.

The operation is connected to the case involving the Bengaluru Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Prison radicalisation and ‘fidayeen’ (suicide) attack conspiracy. The Bengaluru City Police had originally registered the case following the seizure of arms and ammunition, including seven pistols, four hand grenades, one magazine and 45 live rounds, and four walkie-talkies in July last year.

Five people were initially arrested and their interrogation led to the arrest of one more, taking the total arrests in the case to six. Lashkar-e-Taiba operative and leader T Nasir, who radicalized these five people in Bengaluru Central Jail, is an accused in the case along with Junaid Ahmed, who is absconding.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case in October last year and conducted searches at several places including Ahmed’s house. Earlier on January 12, the NIA charge-sheeted eight individuals, including a life convict and two absconders, in connection with the case. Among those charged is T Naseer from Kerala’s Kannur district, currently serving a life sentence in the Central Prison in Bengaluru since 2013.
