NIA gets 10-day police custody of Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram cafe blast accused

Bengaluru: On Saturday, The NIA Special Court remanded 10-day police custody to the prime suspects in Rameshwaram blast case of Bengaluru. The accused were produced before an NIA special court judge in Bengaluru.

The duo — mastermind and co-conspirator — were arrested from West Bengal on April 12. They were brought to Bengaluru by the NIA from Kolkata on transit remand. A court in Kolkata had granted a 3-day transit remand to the two accused in the blast case on Friday.

The accused have been identified as Musavir Hussain Shajib and Abdul Mathin Taha, the NIA said. The accused were nabbed from their hideout in Kolkata, where they were hiding using fake identities. They stayed at a guest house in Kolkata from March 25 to March 28.

In a statement, the NIA said, Elaborating on the details of the arrest, “The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two absconding terrorists, including the mastermind in the Bengaluru cafe blast case, after tracking their hideout near Kolkata in West Bengal, bringing an end to a month-long search operation for the two.”

The statement said,”On learning that the terrorists were staying in a lodge near Kolkata with fake identities, the NIA requested West Bengal Police to secure the accused and subsequently the police took prompt action, leading to successful completion of the search operation and apprehension of both the terrorists.”

The NIA took Shazib and Taha into custody in Kolkata for their alleged involvement in the explosion at Rameshwaram Cafe on March 1. It is noteworthy that last week the investigating agency had identified Musavir Hussain Shajib as the main accused who carried out the blast and Abdul Mathin Taha as a co-conspirator.

At least 10 people were injured in the blast. The investigating agency had also identified Maaz Munir Ahmed and Muzammil Sheriff, who played a key role in the blast. The NIA said that Sheriff was involved in providing logistical support to other accused who carried out the IED blasts.
