Nirmala Sitharaman among seven women inducted into Modi’s new 18th Lok Sabha cabinet

This time 7 women ministers have got a place in the Modi cabinet. It includes Nirmala Sitharaman, Annapurna Devi, Anupriya Patel, Shobha Karandlaje, Raksha Khadse, Savitri Thakur and Neemuben Bambhania.

New Delhi: The swearing-in ceremony of the Modi government took place on June 9 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. During this, Narendra Modi took oath as Prime Minister for the third time. This time 7 women ministers have got a place in the Modi cabinet. It includes Nirmala Sitharaman, Annapurna Devi, Anupriya Patel, Shobha Karandlaje, Raksha Khadse, Savitri Thakur and Neemuben Bambhania. 64 year old Nirmala Sitharaman is a member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha. Whereas Annapurna Devi (age 55 years) has won the election from Koderma seat of Jharkhand. At the same time, Raksha Khadse is the youngest woman minister of the Modi cabinet. 37-year-old Raksha Khadse is the daughter-in-law of Nationalist Congress Party leader Eknath Khadse. The new female ministers are former Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP MPs Annpurna Devi, Shobha Karandlaje, Raksha Khadse, Savitri Thakur, and Nimuben Bambhaniya, and Apna Dal MP Anupriya Patel.

Sitharaman and Devi have been inducted into the union cabinet, while the others have been sworn in as ministers of state.

Irani and Pawar lost their seats in Amethi and Dandori, respectively. Jyoti, Jardosh, Lekhi, and Bhoumik were not fielded by the BJP.

Devi, Karandlaje, Khadse, Sehrawat, and Patel, who won the recent elections, have joined the new council of ministers.

A total of 74 women won the Lok Sabha elections this year, a slight decrease from the 78 elected in 2019.

Nirmala Sitharaman was sworn in as the Minister of Corporate Affairs and 28th Finance Minister of India on 31 May 2019. She has also served as the second female Defense Minister of India. Sitharaman joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2006 and was appointed as the national spokesperson of the party in 2010. In 2014, Sitharaman was inducted as a junior minister from Andhra Pradesh in Narendra Modi’s cabinet and was elected as a Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh. Nirmala Sitharaman was born on August 18, 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Narendra Modi, along with his 71 council of ministers, took the oath on Sunday, marking the start of a new coalition government after two full terms where the BJP had a majority on its own.

Modi’s first term in 2014 saw eight women ministers. In his second term, six women were sworn in, and by the end of the 17th Lok Sabha, there were ten women ministers
