Several Kannada activists had been fighting for introduction of Kannada language on Google Maps so the people of Karnataka could easily find the locations. Indian languages already present on Google Maps were Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Till a day ago, you could see Tamil and Telugu in place names close to Bengaluru border with Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, but no Kannada.

Arun Javagal, a Kannada activist, told Bangalore Mirror, “Google has about 30 applications like Gmail, Maps etc. Introduction of Kannada language will definitely help Kannadigas as a large number of people use these applications. According to a survey, nine out of 10 Indians will use the Internet in the near future. By providing services in Indian languages, Google is getting technology closer to these people.”

“It will also be helpful for us to pass on our language to the future generation so that we could preserve nativity and our language. Introduction of Kannada language on Google map will help the local people and cabs like Ola and Uber to find locations easily,” he said.
