Odisha health minister Naba Kishore Das shot twice in chest near Brajrajnagar, injured

An assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) shot Naba Kishore Das, the state health and family welfare minister, in Odisha's Jharsuguda district on Sunday. An officer gave this information.

New Delhi: Health Minister Naba Das was shot near Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda district of Odisha. Naba Das was on his way to attend a program at Gandhi Chowk in Brajrajnagar when he was shot. Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kishore Das was shot dead by an assistant sub-inspector of police in Jharsuguda district on Sunday, an official said.

Brajrajnagar SDPO Gupteshwar Bhoi told reporters, “Assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) Gopal Das fired at the minister, injuring the minister and taking him to the hospital. Eyewitnesses claim that as soon as he got out of his vehicle, He was shot. The motive behind the attack is still unclear. A video shows Naba Das being taken away in a car.

Videos from the spot showed a bloody Mr Das being carried to a car.

At a public grievance office opening, Naba Das was the chief guest. When he arrived, a crowd gathered to welcome him. Suddenly, a gunshot was heard. We saw a police personnel running away after shooting from close range,” a witness said.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the attack, and directed the crime branch to investigate it.

“I am shocked at the unfortunate incident of attack. I strongly condemn this and pray for his early recovery. Crime Branch is directed to take up investigation. Senior officers of Crime Branch are asked to go to the spot,” news agency ANI quoted him saying.

Tension prevailed in the town after the incident, with supporters of Mr Das questioning “security lapses”. Some of them claimed that a conspiracy was hatched to target him.
