New Delhi: Indian Elavenil Valarivan topped the women’s 10m air rifle event to secured her second gold medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol competition in Brazil.
Elavenil played to perfection in the strong eight-woman final field, never scoring below 10.1 in the entire 24 shots. China Zhang Jiale won the bronze medal.
Elavenil finished with a score of 252.2, surpassing France’s 20-year-old sensation Muller, who won the silver medal with 251.9. In the men’s 10m air rifle event, India’s lone contender Sandeep Singh shot 628.2 in qualification and finished 14th.
Elavenil along with Sandeep had finished fifth in the 10m air rifle mixed team event with a combined score of 629.1, on Friday. The fourth and final medal round spot went to Israel, which was 0.5 points ahead of the Indian pair in the 42-team field.
Elavenil shot 314.8 while Sandeep shot 314.3, helping the Indians miss out on a bronze medal. Israel ultimately won the bronze medal, while Germany won the gold medal and the silver went to Hungary.
A 16-member Indian team was participating in seven Olympic events in the Rio World Cup. Italy tops the medal tally with two gold while India is joint third with Armenia.
