Pakistan: 15 Hindu students from Punjab University injured in clash after being stopped from celebrating Holi

Pakistan/Lahore: At least 15 students from Pakistan’s minority Hindu community were injured on Monday during a brawl after members of a radical Islamic students’ organization allegedly prevented them from celebrating Holi on the Panjab University campus here. The incident took place on Monday at the Law College of Panjab University, when around 30 Hindu students gathered to celebrate Holi.

Kashif Brohi, a student of the university and an eyewitness, told PTI that as the students gathered on the campus of the law college, activists of Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) forcibly stopped them from celebrating Holi, which led to the clash. As a result of the clash, 15 Hindu students were injured.

Demonstration outside Vice Chancellor’s office
Brohi claimed that he had taken prior permission from the university administration. Khet Kumar’s hand got hurt during this. He said that university security personnel beat him up when he protested outside the vice-chancellor’s office to protest against the IJT members forcibly stopping them from celebrating Holi.

Police complaint against security personnel
Khet Kumar said that we have given a police complaint against the IJT and the security personnel involved in beating and torturing us, but the FIR has not been registered yet. When contacted by PTI, IJT (Punjab University) spokesperson Ibrahim Shahid denied the involvement of its students in the incident.

Not allowed to celebrate Holi
Panjab University spokesman Khurram Shahzad said that the university administration had not given permission to celebrate Holi in the law college garden. He said that if the function was celebrated inside the room then there would have been no problem. Shahzad said that the Vice-Chancellor has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
