Pakistan: 37 Dead in landslides, building collapse due to heavy winter rains in 3 days

Peshawar, Pakistan: Over a period of three days, Khyber District has been ravaged by continuous torrential rains, causing structural collapse and causing significant damage. Pakistani authorities said Sunday at least 37 people died and 50 others injured due to heavy rains that swept across the country, causing several houses to collapse and landslides to block roads, particularly in the northwest. About 23 rain-related deaths were reported in various areas in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan since Thursday night, the provincial disaster management authority said in a statement.

Reports coming in from various areas of the district paint a grim picture of the devastation caused by the recent heavy rains. Apart from the loss of livestock and injuries to residents, several houses were also damaged. The roof of a shop in Bacha Mena, Torkham, and several boundary walls and rooms in Jamrud tehsil, including shops of Javed and Gulmand of Ghundi, Jamrud, have collapsed. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported from these incidents.

At least 27 people, mostly children, reportedly died in rain-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan since Thursday night, the provincial disaster management authority said. However, the extent of the property and financial losses has prompted calls for assistance from the provincial government and concerned authorities. The affected residents of the district are in dire need of support to rebuild their lives and homes in the aftermath of the storm.

Chief Minister KPK Ali Amin Gandapur said rain-affected people would not be left alone in this critical hour and would be duly compensated against their damages.

At least five people died in southwestern Balochistan province after floods swamped the coastal town of Gwadar, forcing authorities to use boats to evacuate people.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted more rainfall in the region, which is likely to cause further flash floods, road closures and landslides. These conditions not only pose a constant risk for structural damage but also jeopardize the safety and mobility of the district’s residents. Citizens are advised to remain informed and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impacts of the upcoming weather disturbances.

Recent events underscore Khyber District’s vulnerability to severe weather conditions and highlight the need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness measures. As communities begin the recovery process, the focus turns to rebuilding with resilience against future disasters, ensuring that the losses incurred in these torrential rains serve as a catalyst for positive change and communal recovery. Strengthens relationships.
