ISLAMABAD: A close aide of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly making sedition statements during an interview on a private television channel. Earlier the broadcast of the channel was also banned. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill on Monday participated in an ARY news program and slammed the Shahbaz Sharif government for projecting the former prime minister against the army.
Pakistan’s Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has issued a show-cause notice to them, terming the content aired on the channel as “false, hate-mongering and sedition”. The authority said the interview “clearly created a threat to national security by inciting rebellion in the armed forces with completely misleading information”.
The channel, which has close links with Imran Khan, was suspended. After this, Gill was arrested. An Islamabad police spokesman said that Khan’s spokesman, Gill, has been arrested for making statements against the country’s institutions and inciting people to revolt.
Meanwhile, PTI President Imran Khan has termed Gill’s arrest as a ‘hijacking’. “It is a kidnapping, not an arrest. Can such shameful acts happen in a democracy? Political activists are considered enemies. PTI Vice President Fawad Choudhary tweeted, “Shahbaz Gill was caught from Banigala Chowk by unidentified persons who came in a car without a number plate.”
