The university invited the employees to provide an assurance in December to exercise their option after the Punjab government’s notification for the implementation of the updated UGC scales was adopted by the syndicate in November last year. The university teachers’ pay fixing process is almost complete at this point.

The university’s 630 academic members are anxiously awaiting the pay scale revision. “The process of teachers’ pay fixation is complete, and they may get their upcoming salaries in accordance with the updated scales,” according to Punjab University registrar YP Verma.

However, the pay fixation for the non-teaching staff has been under consideration. While the PU senate—the university’s apex governing body—had adopted the 6th Punjab Pay Commission for the non-teaching staff in March last year.

The move will provide a huge enhancement in the salaries of PU teachers. Since 2o18, they have been waiting for a pay hike as the state government didn’t revise their UGC scales.

In its last general body meeting (GBM) on January 17, the Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) demanded the immediate release of updated salary scales in accordance with the 7th Pay Commission. PUTA cautioned the government that they will resume agitation in case of any delay in disbursing the salary of teachers for the month of January 2023 (to be paid in February), according to the revised scales.

However, it is not clear whether the non-teaching staff of the university will get the benefit of salary revision, as salary differences have been found in some cases.
