Ahmedabad: Members of the Patidar community and various organisations on Sunday will hold a protest demanding the renaming of the Narendra Modi stadium in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. The Motera cricket stadium was formerly known as the Sardar Patel stadium.

The gigantic stadium is known as one of the biggest stadiums in the world. The Patidar community’s call is important due to the forthcoming state assembly elections in Gujarat. They have come together under the banner of ‘Sardar Sanman Sankalp Andolan Samiti’, demanding a name change.

Patidar Andolan was started in 2015 by the same group, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), led by Hardik Patel, who recently joined the saffron party after leaving Congress.

On Sunday, the group is set to start a rally from Swaraj Ashram in Bardoli Surat to the stadium in Ahmedabad. On Monday evening, a huge crowd is expected to reach the stadium, and an enormous protest is on the cards in front of Gate No 1.

If the government does not change the name, we will intensify our protest. During the time of the election, they built a huge statue of Sardar Patel, and after the poll result, they changed the name of the stadium. We will not allow this government to misuse Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s name. It is time to give honour back to Sardar Patel, “Atul Patel, convener of the group, said.”

The renovation work of Sardar Patel Stadium took place recently, and it was renamed to Narendra Modi. Make a bigger stadium but don’t remove the previous name of the stadium. We have respect for the PM. The stadium, from the beginning, was known as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. As a result, no one has the right to insult Sardar Saheb. “It is a modest appeal to all to join this yatra for the purpose,” Alpesh Kathiriya of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samitis said.

The protest will not entertain any party leader. People across the state are urged to join them. However, Gujarat police are on high alert in anticipation of the rally and protest.
