New York: The poor are not getting proper food, and a huge number of people sleep without having food. The global hunger rate has been increasing with the passing of time. The production of food all over the world is enough to feed the entire world, but the waste of food and its poor management across the world rob the poor of a proper, normal diet. Wastage of food in a huge quantity is a matter of concern, and curbing this problem is a global issue.

People across the world squander 1 billion metric tonnes of food each year, as per the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Food Waste Index Report 2021. It is shocking to know that one-third of all food produced in the entire world is wasted, which is difficult to digest and requires reforms in the food system at the earliest.

Food waste all over the world is not only responsible for food shortages that keep millions of people hungry, but the production of greenhouse gases due to waste food material is a challenge for the environment.

Currently, 14% of the world’s food is lost during the process of harvest and retail, and around 17 percent is wasted in retail and consumption. As a result, 811 million people remain hungry.

Furthermore, cooked food is being thrown away in large quantities at weddings and parties, and dustbins are overflowing with it. The rich, in their pomp and show, prepare numerous items that cannot be consumed and are thus wasted.
