Sachin Pilot, former deputy chief minister of Rajasthan, came out with a smile after meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The Congress party has been gearing up for the assembly polls in the state to be held in 2023.

Earlier this month, he had a meeting with Rahul and Priyanka, and there was a rumour of a change in the party leadership in Rajasthan.

He described his meeting with Sonia as “fruitful” and said the “right things” that the party is already doing will help it retain power in the state in 2023.

In Rajasthan, every five years for the last three decades, the government has changed. We need to break this trend. If we do the right things, like we have started to do, and if we move in that direction, the Congress will win the next assembly elections, “he said.

Pilot was engaged in a rebellion against the Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, two years ago. The party high command kept things under control and was able to pacify the supporters of both factions. According to Pilot’s supporters, the process has to culminate in the younger leader replacing Gehlot as chief minister.

The change in the party leadership before the assembly polls in Punjab failed to bring any fruitful result for the Congress in the state. Pilot’s supporters say that if a leadership change has to be brought about in Rajasthan, it should take place immediately, so that the new leader gets time to work on the public perception of the party.

Ashok Gehlot visited Delhi a couple of days back to take part in a presentation made by election strategist Prashant Kishor at Sonia’s 10 Janpath residence.

Congress wishes to keep Rajasthan intact

The Congress doesn’t like to slip Rajasthan into its hands. Here, people have traditionally voted out the incumbent, and the elections have been a bipolar affair, with the BJP being the rival party.

The main argument of the Pilot camp is that Gehlot, as chief minister, has not been able to ensure the party’s victory in the past.

However, Gehlot’s supporters say that he is well placed in the power dynamics in the state and enjoys the support of a majority of the legislators. They point out that when Pilot rebelled against the chief minister in 2020, he failed to garner the support of a sizeable number of MLAs.

The Gandhi family respects Gehlot and respects his political counsel. It is said that the party leadership will be cautious in bringing about any changes in Rajasthan. The party faced a heavy defeat after the ticket disagreements in Punjab, which took place before the assembly polls.

The party is cautious in the case of Rajasthan. Sachin Pilot, the party’s young face, may take over Gehlot’s CM post in Rajasthan amidst the 2023 assembly elections.
