PM Modi cancels Ahmedabad roadshow after 91 people lost their lives in Morbi accident

Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to Gujarat and Rajasthan, has decided to cancel his road show to be held in Ahmedabad on Monday in view of the Morbi bridge accident. In the Morbi cable bridge collapse incident at least 91 people lost their lives on Sunday evening. However, the official programmes to dedicate Railway projects worth Rs 2,900 crore will be held.

Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to Gujarat and Rajasthan, has decided to cancel his road show to be held in Ahmedabad on Monday in view of the Morbi bridge accident. In the Morbi cable bridge collapse incident at least 91 people lost their lives on Sunday evening. However, the official programmes to dedicate Railway projects worth Rs 2,900 crore will be held.

Today, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a review meeting soon after a cable bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Morbi on Sunday, claiming the lives of over 91 people. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited Morbi city in the State on Sunday night and took stock of the ongoing rescue operation after a newly-restored suspension bridge over Machchhu river collapsed in the evening, killing at least 90 people.

At least 90 people have died, while more than a 100 other have been admitted and are under treatment after a colonial era cable bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Morbi town on Sunday evening, plunging over 350 people into the river. Several teams of NDRF and personnel of Navy and Air Force have been ordered to be airlifted to the site to help in the rescue efforts and comb the river bed as many people are feared drowned in the 10 feet deep water.

The PMO tweeted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other officials about the accident in Morbi. He has asked for immediate deployment of rescue teams to the spot for rescue operations. He has asked to closely and continuously monitor the situation and extend all possible help to the affected people.

In another tweet, the PMO said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the accident in Morbi. 50,000 will be given to the injured.

The Chief Minister expressed grief over the accident. He said that “I am deeply saddened by the tragedy of suspension bridge collapse in Morbi. Relief and rescue operations are on by the system. The system has been directed to make arrangements for immediate treatment of the injured. I am in constant touch with the district administration in this regard.” The chief minister also announced Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the families of those who died in the incident.

President Murmu tweeted, “The tragedy in Morbi, Gujarat has left me worried. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected people. Relief and rescue efforts will bring succour to the victims.”

“I am deeply saddened by the accident in Morbi. I have spoken to Harsh Sanghvi, Minister of State for Home and other officials of Gujarat in this matter. Local administration is engaged in relief work with full readiness, NDRF is also reaching the spot soon. The administration has been directed to provide immediate treatment to the injured,” Amit Shah said.
