PM Modi suggests India as host of 2028 COP at climate change summit in Dubai, launches “green credit” scheme

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called on all countries to work together to drastically reduce global emissions and announced a “green credit” initiative that focuses on creating carbon skins with people’s participation. At the COP28 summit in Dubai, PM Modi today said India’s emissions are very low compared to other nations whose population is much less. He said India would like to host the COP33 in 2028.

The Prime Minister announced the Green Credit Initiative, which focuses on creating ‘carbon sinks’ through participation of world economies. He expressed his gratitude to world leaders for providing continued support on the issues raised by him such as climate justice, climate finance and green debt.

PM Modi said, mentioning to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are a climate action plan to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts, “India’s population is 17 per cent of the global population, but in global carbon emissions India is only at 4 per cent. We are moving fast in achieving the NDC targets. In fact, we reached our non-fossil fuel targets nine years before the deadline. We will also keep going ahead towards our goal of net zero by 2070”.

PM Modi said, “We do not have much time to correct the mistakes of the last century.” He asked every country to work sincerely to achieve its NDC goals.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is a decision-making body that reviews the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The Environment Ministry has launched two initiatives that reflect India’s proactive approach to tackling climate change, and sustainability taking forward the ‘LiFE’ – ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ movement announced by PM Modi in 2021.

The “green credit” initiative seeks to encourage environmentally friendly practices rooted in tradition and conservation reflecting the ideas of the ‘LiFE’ concept.

PM Modi has a busy schedule for Friday’s World Climate Action Summit. He will spend at least 21 hours in Dubai and participate in two special initiatives on climate events. PM Modi is also expected to deliver at least four speeches and hold seven bilateral meetings with other leaders during the summit. Additionally, the Prime Minister will hold separate and informal meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the Summit.

The World Climate Action Summit is the high-level segment of COP28 that will be attended by many of the world’s leading leaders to discuss ways to tackle climate change and reduce greenhouse emissions. PM Modi is also scheduled to participate in three other high level programs.
