The nine-year-old Dalit boy was allegedly beaten up by a teacher for drinking water from a pot in school on July 20. He died during treatment at a hospital in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on August 13.

A case was lodged based on a complaint by a resident of Jalore, who alleged that Digvijaya Singh had linked the accused teacher to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in a tweet.

Chail Singh, 40, the accused teacher, was detained and charged with murder and violations of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities Act).

However, the Congress-led Rajasthan government has decided to give Rs 5 lakh to the boy’s family as a relief. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been formed earlier this week to investigate the child’s death.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued notices to the senior officials of the Rajasthan government, chief secretary and the director general of Rajasthan Police, demanding a full report on the matter. It has also asked to provide an update on the action taken against the accused.
