Jaipur: Over 80 MLAs who supported Ashok Gehlot as chief minister submitted their resignation letters to assembly speaker CP Joshi at his residence on Sunday night, which has created another major crisis for the Congress in the desert state. The MLAs have been opposing the appointment of a new Rajasthan CM from the Sachin Pilot faction, who rebelled against the Gehlot government in July 2020.

The chaotic political developments occur as CM Ashok Gehlot gears up to contest the Congress president’s election and rumours are rampant that his bitter rival Sachin Pilot could take his place.

Here are the story’s major developments:

A high-stakes political thriller involving a change in leadership played out in Rajasthan after the resignation of 82 MLAs on Sunday night.

However,Congress leader Sachin Pilot and his supporters awaited the legislators for the CLP meeting but it could not take place. Mallikarjun Kharge and Ajay Maken were also waiting at CM Gehlot’s residence, but the meeting never took place.

In order to resolve the situation, Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, instructed observers Mallikarjun Kharge and Ajay Maken to speak with Rajasthan MLAs one-on-one. Mallikarjun Kharge and Ajay Maken, both AICC observers, will reach Delhi today to deliver the report to the top leadership.

The MLAs who want a chief ministerial candidate should be from the 102 MLAs who remained loyal to the Congress party in June 2020, when an attempt was made to topple the government.

BJP state president Satish Poonia said the trends of the 2023 assembly elections have started in the state.

Tonk MLA Sachin Pilot has been looking to grab the top post in the state since the Congress emerged victorious in the 2018 assembly polls. In fact, Pilot and his 18 loyalist MLAs rebelled against Gehlot’s leadership. The political crisis ended after the intervention of Rahul Gandhi, but Sachin Pilot was removed from the deputy CM post and as the State PCC chief as well.
