In the 1990s, Sinéad O’Connor changed the world’s thinking about female singers. Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar led tributes to the singer saying her “music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare”. He added, “Condolences to her family, her friends and all who loved her music.”
O’Connor converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhda Sadaqat, although she continued to perform under her old name, Sinead O’Connor. She released 10 studio albums between 1987 and 2014.
She was outspoken with her social and political views. Born in Dublin, O’Connor made 10 albums in her career and was best known for her cover of Prince Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990. O’Connor’s 17-year-old son Shane died days after he was reported missing last year.
The death of his son had troubled him greatly. He posted on social media, “I have decided to end my worldly life” and requested that “no one should follow his example”.
The singer later stopped performing live after the death of her son. Tributes have been pouring in from fans on social media after the singer’s death was announced on Wednesday evening. Irish author Marion Keyes described O’Connor death was heartbreaking.
