Lucknow: India is celebrating its glorious 75-years of Independence Day, this year on August 15. Our every breath is indebted to the braves of this country who served this land with their blood and fought a long battle of 200 years to uproot the colonial rule from India.
India attained freedom on August 15, 1947 at midnight just as the clock ticked 12.00. This glorious victory was won eighty-nine years after the British Crown occupied it from East India Company. India’s Legislative Council had taken over the power from the crown through and Act passed by British Parliament on July 4 the same year.
India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru declared India’s independence on August 14 at midnight with his famous the ‘Tryst With Destiny’ speech. There were three main speakers at the Central Hall of Parliament at that time, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru being the third notable speaker at the official, the other two were Chaudhary Khaliquzaman and Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
In his speech, Nehru, referring to 1929 Lahore Congress, said, “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”
As historic as the day, this speech too made a place for itself in the history and in true sense told us the meaning of the freedom. Not just Nehru’s speech but there are hundreds of powerful quotes that had sparked a never ending revolution and helped India won its 200-years long battle against colonial rule and made their way into our textbooks. Here are few of those famous quotes that jolted the very spirit of India which was in shackle for so long.
We are told to remember the idea, not the man. Because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten. But four hundred years later an idea can still change the world.
