Protest turns violent over death of SC boy in UP’s Auraiya, accused teacher absconding

Achhalda: People are angry over the death of a 15-year-old Dalit boy after he was allegedly beaten up by a school teacher in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district. The boy was allegedly thrashed by his school teacher Ashwini Singh on September 7 because he had made a spelling mistake in the social science exam in the school. The boy, named Nikhit Dohra, died at a private hospital on Saturday night and his body was handed over to his family on Monday evening after the postmortem.

The family and Bhim Army members had refused to cremate the body, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused teacher. They staged a sit-in outside the school where Nikhit studied in Achhalda area of ​​the district. The protests turned violent after the death of a Dalit student. Some angry locals set a police jeep on fire. The protesters also allegedly pelted stones at the policemen.

After senior police and district officials reached the spot and assured prompt action, the boy’s family and Bhim Army members agreed to take Nikit’s body to their village for cremation. A senior official said that the search is on and the teacher Ashwini Singh will be arrested soon.

According to police, protest was organized by the Bhim Army, but the perpetrators of the violence were local. He said that he has assured the family and members of the organization of speedy action against the accused.
